We had the worst experience with the Rocklin, CA division. This program is not worth the cost. They rely on parent volunteers to run the program and coach. You pay to either coach your own kid, or to have your kid coached by someone who likely never even played volleyball. Absolutely horrible communication. Our entire registration process said only Wednesdays, and even as volunteer coaches, we weren’t informed that there would also be Saturday games, almost every Saturday, 3-4 hours long, until a few days before the first game. This program is a joke. Save your money.
My daughter started off a year ago with a slight interest in volleyball, and had never played an organized sport before. Signing her up for USYVL was completely transformative and turned this slight interest into an absolute passion. She started off in the outdoor leagues, which are great for complete beginners without the pressure of being super competitive or experienced. It was just plain fun, but of course you only get out of it how much you put in. The parents are encouraged to volunteer and help out, which suits me better because I like being actively involved in something my kids enjoy. And quite frankly, the volunteer "work" is fun too. During the winter months, my child is enrolled in as many USYVL winter clinics as possible, and it's a completely different experience of volleyball. She has learned so much from even just one session, and everyone from the coaches to the other players are all very welcoming, encouraging, and supportive. Once spring comes, she'll be enrolled in Advanced Juniors, which will be the next big stepping stone on her path towards trying out for her school team. Without USYVL, I don't think my daughter would stand a chance of making it on her school team. It's been worth every penny and every minute, to see how much my daughter enjoys the sport and how much she's grown in skills and positive attitude. I don't understand how there could be critical reviews from others, but I know that all of the kids and parents I've met through USYVL have been very happy.
We’ve had such a great experience with this volleyball league! The coaches work with kids at every level and create such a positive, supportive environment. It’s not at all cutthroat and they really focus on teamwork, sportsmanship, and cheering each other on. The coaches (we mostly had Coach Frank and Coach Carlos) are amazing at meeting the girls where they’re at and helping them grow, whether they’re beginners or more experienced players. It’s been such a great experience for our daughter, and we’ll definitely be back!
The grass league is a great, non intimidating intro to volleyball. The grass league is perfect for new players, and the intermediate/advanced league is excellent for more experienced/skilled players!
For a paid program it was surprising they seemed to have more teams than coaches. (And in reading other reviews, this seems to be the norm). It seems like they're happy to take more players’ registration payments than they can actually manage. Then, there was an awful bullying issue where my kid was being targeted by another player and was accused of instigating the trouble. The head coach/clinician, Chris, and the director, Veronica, seriously mismanaged the situation and made it much, MUCH worse. When it came out that the other player and her parent have a long history of causing problems and that my kid didn’t do anything, they did not take responsibility for the harm they did and did not formally apologize. It ended up being extremely damaging for my daughter’s confidence. We had to quit mid-season because we learned she’d be playing that player’s team every single game for the rest of the season. I’m not sure why there weren’t other teams to play when there were so many teams in the league. I encourage you to look elsewhere when exploring sports opportunities for your child. This league is extremely mismanaged, understaffed, and untrained in anti-bullying/conflict resolution
